As mental health professionals, my family's experience with Dr. Kenneth Markel and Westside Family Dental in NY was nothing less than disturbing. My daughter, now 7, needed to have a procedure done (sealants for her molars). To make a long and insane story short, (which I will be blogging about on ImprovisationNews.com), after a 5 minute examination, the Dr. took me into an office and told me how he planned to "control my daughter", recommending laughing gas for her cleaning and for the sealant procedure and going on to say he had begun "controlling her and me already" by having her wait in a separate room while we were talking. His choice of words was both disturbing and revealing. We had her teeth cleaned (with NO GAS, much to the Doctor's chagrin), but, insisted on being in the room for the sealant procedure. PARENTS, TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS He canceled the sealant procedure when we insisted on being in the room and when we called to reschedule, his office assistant doubled the price for us from $600 to $1100. When pressed for a reason why, she said it was for the Doctor's time and for being in the room. What? He wasn't even going to perform the procedure? No wonder he didn't want the parents in there.

I took my almost 3-year old for an initial visit and Dr. Ken was very pleasant and made my son feel at ease. The office was clean and professional. My complaints stem from the fact that I had to wait about 30 minutes with a wriggly (and probably nervous) toddler for the first am appointment, and also because I was under the impression from their website that they accepted my insurance which they did not. Because it was coded as a consultation and not a cleaning/exam, I was not reimbursed. That was frustrating.

Dr. Markel is amazing. I took my 4 year old daughter expecting problems. Instead she left laughing and asking when she will get to come back again. I would recommend Dr. Markel to everyone!

Dr. Markel was recommended by a co-worker. Our experience was satisfying for the most part. However, on the last visit, my 5 year old, how lost her first tooth was in his chair and he pulled my husband out of the room saying "dad i need to talk to you for 2 mins" My husband obliged and followed him to a room. He left my husband in the room and closed the door. My husband waited for about 3 minutes and then decided to go see what was going on. He went out to see the doctor disciplining his hygienist in front of our child. I understand that it is preferable to have the child in the room with the parents in an inconspicuous position. However, it is unprofessional of a trained professional to escort a parent out of the room without his consent. When my husband, who was not pleased, confronted him he was angry and told my husband it's his office and he could do whatever he wants. I suggest if you want to have an opinion where your child's dental health is concerned do not go to this dentist. He thinks because he owns and operates the clinic he can make decisions about other children, regardless of the parents' feelings. I am very disappointed and disgusted with Dr. Markel. He needs to consider self Professional Development.

Pleasant, unremarkable experience. Front desk is helpful. Hygeinists try to sell you special tooth brushes.
