Case Description
I had a molar crown break in half which led to the root becoming painfully irritated. My dentist sent me to an endodontist for a very simple (no infection, etc) root canal procedure that took 30 mins. I found out two weeks later that the endodontist charged me $2500! He told me it was going to be $550 but my credit card showed the $2500 charge. Is this a normal cost for a root canal? This was a run down office with the entrance in a back alley too, not a plush place.

It depends if it is an initial root canal, root canal retreatment or an apicoectomy surgical root canal procedure. Initial root canal treatment by an endodontist varies from $1000-1600, retreatment from $1200-1800, and apicoectomy from $1400-2500. It really depends on what was done -- what appeared to be simple to you, may not have been so simple. If you have a question about your bill, I would suggest talking to the endodontist office and get a transactions break down. $550 is really cheap for any molar root canal... I have never heard of an endodontist charging that little. X-rays, examination and pulp testing for diagnosis are reasonable fees and can be a few hundred dollars alone. Many offices charge for the placement of a rubber dam (like a surgical gown for the tooth) to keep the tooth isolated during the procedure - $100 or so. The best bet is to contact the office directly and ask them to explain the charges. Now, that you had your root canal done, you should see a general dentist to have the tooth restored (new crown). The biggest reason that root canals fail is due to root fracture. There are discount dental plans that can save you some money -- ameriplan, careington. Hope that this helps.
