Root canal cost and bruising after x-ray

Root canal cost and bruising after x-ray

Need Dentist / Specialist: Yes
Provide Cost Estimate: Yes
X-rays Available: No
Case Summary
Root Canal
Teeth: 27
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: Unknown
Last Cleaning: Unknown
Case Description
Last week, I felt what seemed to be a filling fall out of a tooth when I was eating a carmel candy. I now feel a sharp edge and a hole in the side of the tooth. I never felt any pain (and still don't).

I went to a dentist this morning and he took an x-ray and said that it was inconclusive and that I would either need a crown (for about $1800) or a root canal ($4000 with referral to an endontist). He said that he couldn't determine from the x-ray which way it would go, and that once he started removing decay to place the crown, I would have to all the way and have a root canal if it was indicated. I'm a medical student with little savings, and I don't have insurance--only a discount card from Aetna ("Vital Savings) which gives a discount on the procedures at the rate Aetna has negotiated. I'm wondering if those prices are reasonable estimates, and if there's anything I can do to limit the cost. I'm also wondering if there is any other technique to determine whether a crown or root canal is necessary before the dentist starts removing decay.

Additionally, after I got home, I've noticed something that looks like bruising on the side of my mouth (externally). It's not sore, but it looks like the place where the technician took the x-ray. Could that be related, and is it something to be concerned about?

Thank you for any help!

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Cost Estimate: $2400
A couple of answers :

1. Aetna's fees are not often equal that of most offices. If you find an office that is in Aetna's network (and that you like), you could reduce your out-of-pocket expense. That being said, the fees you were quoted are on the higher side but not unheard off.

2. You could simply seek a 2nd opinion with another dentist or consider contacting an endodontist (root canal specialist) right away. What your current dentist has told you seems reasonable, however.

Good luck

Cost Estimate: $1400 for just crown, 2500 for both
I agree with the previous reply posted: the fees are on the high side, but the treatment recommended seems reasonable. Some dentists, such as myself, perform most of their own root canal treatments, saving referrals to the endodontist for particularly difficult cases. In that case not only would you save money, but the root canal and crown can be completed at the same time.

You may save money with a "Vital Savings" dentist, but not at our office. We prefer not to let the insurance company determine the fees, since they do so by actuarial tables, not by what's best for the patient.

I doubt the bruising on you face is due to the x-ray. It is either the tooth starting to go bad, or perhaps some blue dye on the assistant's gloves or on the x-ray equipment.

Hope all works out for you, and good luck in medical school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike Rogers

Cost Estimate: $Filling $245.00, or RC and Cown $1700.00
Dear Patient,

We our sorry to hear of you losing a filling to a Carmel candy, that type of candy will do it to you all the time, I know cause I too love Carmel candy too.

Now what to do with repairing the tooth #27, well we to will need to take an x-ray, or bring in the one that the other Dentist took.

Depending on how much of the tooth is left and what we see from the x-ray, you could just need to replace the lost filling, or yes need a Root Canal and Crown. But I assure you that our fees are a bit more a fordable and we offer a payment plane that will fit your student finance life style.
