Case Summary

Teeth: 31
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: two weeks ago
Last Cleaning: two weeks ago
Case Description
Had pain in tooth 31and comfort dental dentist said that I might have a abscess and need a root canal. He went ahead and did the scheduled numbing for deep cleaning. My jaw started to close. He completed the deep cleaning and I got a huge infection and had to go to ER two days later with trouble swallowing, tremendous swelling and high pain. After two weeks of antibiotics, the swelling is gone. But my jaw is still locked almost closed. (finger width open) and I still have soreness and weakness in my tongue. I have great difficulty eating and chewing and mostly just eat yogurt.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Have you returned to see the dentist which started treatment? Have you been referred to see an oral surgeon about your jaw or have you had treatment on #31. I would definitely recommend addressing this issue as soon as possible as abscesses can have very significant health complications. Ultimately it would be best to have a complete examination and records to evaluate your entire oral health (not just treat one part of your mouth as one area may affect and infect another). After all this information is gathered, you have the opportunity to make informed choices about your health. Obviously, however, treating your immediate discomfort and infection is paramount and you need to see a skilled clinician to accomplish this. I recommend you proceed at your earliest convenience.

It sounds as though you may have several issues occurring simultaneously. The decreased opening may be due to TM joint issues, or possibly even continued infection. I would recommend you see a "TM joint" specialist. I do not treat TMJ patients. The tongue weakness is harder to define. Often, very little can be done to address this issue, especially if it involves nerves. It may be prudent to seek a neurologist for evaluation.

Dear Patient, You have not indicated if the root canal treatment for #31 was performed or not! As far as your TMD, you will need to see a specialist, and follow up for your #31as your spread of infection could be from #31 abcessing.
